1887년 초대 주미전권공사로 임명되어 미국에 파견되었던 박정양(朴定陽, 1841~1905) 공사의 부인 양주 조씨(楊州趙氏, 1841~1892)의 묘지(墓誌고인의 생애와 성품, 가족관계 등의 행적을 적어 무덤에 함께 묻은 돌이나 도판陶板)가 미국에서 돌아와 고국의 후손 품에 안겼다.

문화재청(청장 최응천)은 국외소재문화재재단(이사장 김정희)과 함께 10월 30일(월) 오후 3시 국외소재문화재재단 사무실에서 마크 A. 피터슨(Mark A. Peterson) 미국 브리검 영 대학교(Brigham Young University, 美 유타 주 소재) 명예교수로부터 기증받은 ‘백자청화정부인양주조씨묘지(白磁靑畵貞夫人楊州趙氏墓誌, 이하 ‘묘지’)를 박찬수 반남박씨 죽천공파 종중 회장(박정양 증손, 고려대학교 경영학과 교수)에게 전달했다.

資憲大夫戶曹判書 潘南朴定陽字致中 配貞夫人楊州趙氏, 考郡守秉瑋, 妣淑人昌原黃氏. 憲宗辛丑六月十三日生, 今上壬辰正月二日卒, 同月二十六日葬于水原荊石面梨木洞子坐原. 男勝吉娶韓山李承陸女, 文科, 歷奎章閣待敎, 至承旨, 歿無育. 長女適延日鄭雲晢, 今參奉. 次女, 全義李文魯.
양주조씨광지*
자헌대부 호조판서(資憲大夫戶曹判書) 반남(潘南) 박정양(朴定陽) 자(字) 치중(致中)의 부인 정부인(貞夫人)** 양주(楊州) 조씨(趙氏)는 아버지가 군수(郡守) 병위(秉瑋)이시고, 어머니가 숙인(淑人)*** 창원(昌原) 황씨(黃氏)이시다. 헌종 신축년(1841) 6월 13일에 태어나 지금 성상(고종) 임진년(1892) 1월 2일 돌아가셨으며, 같은 달 26일 수원 형석면(荊石面) 이목동(梨木洞)에 자좌(子坐) 기슭에서 장사 지냈다. 아들 승길(勝吉)은 한산(韓山) 이씨 이승륙(李承陸)의 딸과 혼인했는데 문과(文科)에 급제하여 규장각 대교(奎章閣待敎)와 승지(承旨)를 역임했다. 후사는 없다. 장녀는 연일(延日) 정씨 정운재(鄭雲晳)와 혼인했는데 정운재는 현재 참봉이다. 차녀는 전의(全義) 이문로(李文魯)와 혼인했다.

피터슨 교수가 기증한 묘지는 1892년 제작된 전형적인 조선 말기 청화백자 묘지로서, 박정양의 첫 번째 부인이었던 양주 조씨의 생애를 도판(陶板) 1장에 122자로 기록하였다. 양주 조씨는 박정양과 1남 2녀를 두었으며, 1892년 사망과 함께 경기도 수원에 묻혔다. 이후 1921년에 박정양의 묘소(경기도 포천 소재)에 합장되었으며, 묘지의 상태로 미루어 볼 때, 합장 이전에 알 수 없는 이유로 유실되었던 것으로 추측된다.
이번 기증은 하버드 대학에서 한국사를 전공한 피터슨 교수가 묘지를 우연히 구입해 보관해오다가 2022년 7월 자신이 운영하는 유튜브 채널 ‘Frog Outside the Well(우물 밖의 개구리)’에서 묘지를 처음 소개하던 중에 후손에게 돌려줄 의사를 밝히면서 시작되었다. 때마침 이 채널을 시청한 국외소재문화재재단 미국사무소 직원이 피터슨 교수와 한국에 있는 박정양 후손 측에 연락을 하면서 기증이 약정되었다.
앞서 국외소재문화재재단은 양측의 동의하에 묘지를 임시로 기탁 받아 2022년 10월 주미대한제국공사관(워싱턴 D.C. 소재)에서 개최된 한미수교 140주년 기념 <초대 주미공사 박정양> 현지 특별전에서 일반에 미리 공개한 바 있다.
당시 묘지를 관람한 관람객들은 “박정양 공사가 135년 전 초대 공사로 워싱턴 D.C.에서 생활했었는데, 박정양 공사 부인의 묘지를 주미대한제국공사관 전시실에서 보게 되니 감회가 새롭다.”는 반응을 보였다.
지난 9월에 전시를 마친 후 묘지는 서울에 소재한 국외소재문화재재단에서 보관되다가 이번 전달식을 통해 무사히 후손의 품으로 돌아갔다.
문화재청과 국외소재문화재재단은 앞으로도 현지 협력망을 강화하고 적극적인 소통을 통해 국외 소재 한국 문화유산의 환수에 최선을 다할 계획이다고 전했다.

Safely Returns Home from the United States
Renowned American Professor in Korean History gave it back to the descendants
The Epitaph plaque (墓誌) of Madam Jo (1841-1892), wife of Park Chung Yang (1841-1905), who was dispatched to the U.S. as the first Korean minister in 1887, returned from the U.S. and was held in the arms of their descendants in their home country.
The Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA; Administrator: Choi Eung-chon), and the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation (OKCHF; Chair: Kim Jung-hee), delivered the White Porcelain Epitaph Plaque with Cobalt-blue Underglaze Calligraphy for Madam Jo of the Yangju Jo clan (백자청화정부인양주조씨묘지; 白磁靑畵貞夫人楊州趙氏墓誌)," donated by Professor Emeritus Mark A. Peterson of Brigham Young University to Mr. Park Chan Su, head of the Bannam Park Clan (great-grandson of minister Park Chung Yang, Professor of Business Administration, Korea University) at 3:00 pm on October 30, 2023, at the office of OKCHF in Seoul.
The epitaph plaque donated by Professor Peterson is a typical late Joseon period one, created in 1892. It recorded the life of Madam Jo of the Yangju Jo Clan, Park Chung Yang's first wife, in 122 letters on one ceramic plaque. Madam Jo had two daughters and a son with Park Chung Yang and was buried in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do province, upon passing in 1892. Her tomb was moved to Pocheon, Gyeonggi-do province for a joint burial with Park Chung Yang in 1921, and it is believed to have been damaged by unknown causes judging by its condition.
Professor Peterson, a renowned scholar in Korean history who received his doctoral degree at Harvard University accidentally purchased this epitaph plaque and kept it until July 2022, when he expressed his intention to return it to the descendants on his YouTube channel, “Frog Outside the Well.” An employee of the OKCHF’s U.S. office, who watched the YouTube video, contacted Prof. Peterson and the descendants of Park Chung Yang, and the donation was agreed upon.
With the consent of both parties, the Foundation showcased the epitaph plaque at the local special exhibition in October 2022 at the Old Korean Legation Museum, Washington, D.C.. Visitors to the exhibition responded, "Park Chung Yang lived in Washington, D.C., nearly 135 years ago, as the first minister. We are deeply touched to see Park Chung Yang's wife's epitaph plaque in the old Korean Legation." The plaque was transported to the Foundation’s headquarters in Seoul at the end of the exhibition in September and kept there - until this delivery ceremony, during which it was safely returned to the family.
The CHA and OKCHF will put in their best efforts for the repatriation of Korean cultural heritage located overseas by strengthening the local cooperation networks and communicating actively.
